Dr. Richard Berri serves as Director of Surgical Oncology and the Peritoneal Malignancies Program in the Van Elslander Cancer Center and St John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. Dr Berri has created a program using hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to treat patients with carcinomatosis from colorectal, appendiceal or other select cancers.
His expertise is centered on Gastrointestinal surgical oncology, with a specific focus on Peritoneal malignancies of any origin. Dr. Berri has published and presented multiple research projects. He has extensive experience with the most complicated cases of peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal, appendiceal, mesothelioma, and other select cancers. At MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas he trained in the surgical treatment and management of peritoneal malignancies, cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy (HIPEC). Furthermore, he has lectured actively on the treatment of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis, borderline resectable pancreatic cancer, and colorectal liver metastases.
In addition to treating the peritoneal carcinomatosis with a surgical approach Dr. Berri has an emphasis on multidisciplinary care of patients and seeking the best treatment plan for the patient in a collaborative manner. He follows the patient closely from the beginning of treatment to seek the best outcome for each individual patient. His goals include continuing clinical trials and research and prolonging the length and improving the quality of life of cancer patients. He has been recognized throughout his career for his leadership, attention to the clinical care of patients and extended compassion with patients, staff, the hospital as a whole, and the community.
