Thomas J. Miner, MD, Assistant Professor at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University received his medical degree from Brown University. He completed a residency in general surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
In 2003, based on his reputation and expertise in surgical oncology, Rhode Island Hospital recruited Dr. Miner to join the Department of Surgery as the Director of Surgical Oncology. Since joining Rhode Island Hospital, Dr. Miner has been dedicated to advancing cancer research and promoting appropriate treatment for Individual patients. Dr. Miner’s research efforts include patient outcomes following surgical procedures performed for the treatment of advanced malignancy. Dr. Miner’s research findings are utilized in his daily clinical practice. By analyzing patient outcome data, Dr. Miner is able to inform and teach his patients about their disease and prognosis. Placing emphasis on symptom management, quality of life, and prolonged survival, Dr. Miner is able to make it easier for his patients to become effective decision makers when facing operative treatment.
Dr. Miner has vast experience in the diagnosis and treatment of primary and metastatic cancer, including cancers effecting the appendix, biliary tract, breast, colon, esophagus, liver, melanoma, ovary pancreas, peritoneum (pseudomyxoma peritonei, peritoneal mesothelioma,) rectum, sarcoma, and stomach. His surgical experience provides him the insight to treat his patients with a comprehensive approach. Dr. Miner is an experienced, dedicated surgeon and scientist who is able to care for his patients by employing the entire spectrum of treatments available for advanced cancers, including minimally invasive surgery, advanced cancer surgery, and investigational approaches when appropriate.
