Evan Ong, MD, MS is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Section of Surgical Oncology at the University of Arizona. Dr. Ong grew up in the Upstate New York area, graduated with a BA and MA degree from Harvard University, and received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. He then matched his general surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago-Cook County Program. During his surgical residency, Dr. Ong spent an additional 2 years as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Pharmacology studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms of inflammation and completed a Master of Science degree. From there, he matched into a surgical oncology fellowship at the first cancer center of the United States, Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY.Dr. Ong’s clinical practice focuses on gastrointestinal cancers with particular interest in treatment options for regional and metastatic disease. He offers state-of-the-art technology such as laparoscopic liver resection, microwave and bipolar radiofrequency ablation as well as Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion (HIPEC), a treatment option for cancers that have disseminated to the peritoneal cavity.Dr. Ong’s research includes studying the role of the immune system in the development and progression of gastrointestinal cancers. Through his co-appointment in the Geriatrics department, Dr. Ong is currently developing a geriatric scoring system to predict surgical outcomes in the elderly patient.
